Chief Executive Officer SisterHood Inc.

​

Rev. Dr. Hilda Covington is a visionary leader, community advocate, and trailblazer in the fight for social justice, equity, and empowerment. As the Founder and Executive Director of SisterHood Inc., she has dedicated her life to uplifting women, children, and families in Burlington, NJ, and beyond. Since founding SisterHood in 1996, she has transformed it into a pillar of support for underserved communities, providing essential services such as food assistance, clothing donations, mentorship programs, and rehabilitative services.

Rev. Covington is also the Pastor and Founder of Wayside Community Church in Burlington, NJ, and the Co-Founder of the Burlington County School of Ministry and Evangelism. She established the Neighborhood Consortium, bringing together local organizations to collaborate and strengthen community resources. Under her leadership, SisterHood Inc. received the 2006 Wynona Lipman Award for the #1 community-based organization in New Jersey, presented by Governor Jon Corzine. In 2007, SisterHood was honored with the New Jersey Child Assault Prevention Award for its commitment to protecting and advocating for children.

Professional Background & Media Appearances

​

Before devoting herself full-time to community service, Rev. Covington had a distinguished career in media and communications. She managed advertising sales and support staff across three locations for Calkins Newspapers Inc. and served as Advertising Manager for the Burlington County Times for 22 years. Her expertise in communications and media relations has made her a respected voice on public platforms. She has been featured on numerous television and radio programs, including a segment on HBO’s “Debates Debates”, where she discussed government faith-based funding alongside national policy leaders. She also co-hosted “Heartline for the Hurting”, a weekly radio program on WIFI-1460 for three years.

 

National & Political Engagement

​

Rev. Covington’s impact extends to the national stage, where she has been recognized for her advocacy and leadership. In January 2005, she was invited to the White House to meet with President George W. Bush alongside 19 African American community leaders from across the country. She also served for three years as part of the African American Leadership Summit’s Senate Advisory Committee in Washington, D.C., at the invitation of Senators Rick Santorum and Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Community Leadership & Advisory Roles

Rev. Covington’s influence and commitment to change are reflected in her extensive involvement with various boards, committees, and task forces, including:

​

  • Burlington County Interagency Action Committee (CIACC)

  • County Emergency Assistance Committee (CEAS)

  • Early Childhood and Youth Advisory Boards, Burlington City

  • Youth Development Commission for Burlington County

  • Federal Peer Review Board for Juvenile Justice

  • Sheriff’s Department Anti-Gang Task Force

  • Anti-Violence Committee

  • Charter Member of the City of Burlington Police Chaplain Unit

Rev. Covington is also deeply committed to education and serves on the Advisory Panel at Rutgers University (Cook Douglas Campus) for the Program in Science Learning Administration and Management. She has also led nonprofit training sessions at Cook Douglas College, sharing her expertise on nonprofit leadership and organizational management.
